So I was thinking on it, and the way a wizard works, they place all their spells in their spellbooks, then remember specific ones to cast.
While I realize this idea might be a major inhibition for wizards, and likely would not be liked by many, I think its RPly correct in the DnD sense, and should be implemented:
Upon creating a character, Wizards recieve an item called "spellbook" (I was thinking that holdable misc book item with a description to tell what it does)
If a wizard has their spellbook stolen, or loses it, than they potentially "lose" the spells they currently have.
I was thinking the way this could work is simple:
Because cantrips and first level spells are so easy, I'm thinking that a wizard will never "lose" those types of spells.
Meanwhile, if a wizard loses their spellbook, they lose the ability to cast any spells of 2nd circle or higher that they don't at that time have memorised.
So lets say wizard A has ghostly visage and invisibility in his 2nd level spell slots. If his book is stolen, he could still use those spells, but none of the others he may or may not have. He can potentially make a new book and store his memorized spells in it, but he'll have to "relearn" the other spells.
To counteract this, I beleive that a wizard would be able to "sense" who has their book due to the magical latency of their spellbooks. So if a wizard is killed, and a theif steals it during raising, the wizard would know it was the theif, or if the theif ran away, the wizard would be able to tell the next time he confronts him.
